Andres Mejides was Hialeah's first Cuban councilman and his efforts to declare Hialeah bilingual and bi-cultural in the tumultous year of 1980 were met with cat calls of "Cubans go home." Thirty years later, Mejides proudly flies the American flag in front of his home and is the patriarch of a multi-generational family. With him is his grandson Vincent Perez, 4.
