8/1994-Al Diaz/Miami Herald--Cubans struggle to get their raft to water as onlookers gather on the jagged shoreline of Cojimar. It was estimated that out of every 10 Cubans who tried to leave by raft, only four made it to U.S. shores. Some gave up and returned home. Some were arrested before they escaped Cuban waters. Many were picked up at sea by the U.S. Coast Guard and spent the next several months in refugee camps. The rest died at sea.
