8/1994-Al Diaz/Miami Herald-- Despite the pounding sea, this Cuban rafter was determined to leave on his raft as he tried to keep it under control. It overturned but he righted his raft and tried again as he prepared to leave the Cojimar coast of Cuba. In 1994 Cuban balseros turned the tiny fishing village into a major point of embarkation for thousands seeking a better life.
