8/1994-Al Diaz/Miami Herald--Idelisa Gonzalez, right, cries and prays to God as her only daughter leaves the tiny fishing village of Cojimar, Cuba on a makeshift raft. The woman on the left is unidentified. For the loved ones left behind. there was the anguish of not knowing whether they'd see their husband, wives, sons, or daughters ever again. It was mostly women who stayed. More than 80 percent of the rafters were male.
